Don’t you just wish there were a magic button you could push to make your website show up higher in search results? I wish I could tell you that this post would reveal one, but the truth is, SEO is hard work, but it can be much easier if you have the right tools.
Historically, a search engine optimizer would use the Google Keyword Planner to help them find the key terms that searchers are typing into search engines. The tool is a part of Google Adwords and you must sign up for an account to use it (you don’t need to setup any ads though). In addition to providing keywords that searchers use to find products and services, you can also access search data at a local level and learn average search trends over the previous 12 months. While this tool is great, it may prove too time intensive for the business owner who is already wearing too many hats.
The reason why this research cannot be ignored is because your content should include the keywords that people are searching for. If you think that most people are searching for “inflatable bouncers” and you optimize your content for that search term, but most people actually search for “bounce houses”, then your work have been in vain.
Luckily, there is a tool that can make life easier and save time while still allowing you to optimize your content for the correct search terms. Simply called Keyword Tool, you can enter terms that you want to optimize for and the service will provide a list of top search terms typed into Google, Bing and YouTube. While it does not provide historical search data, the number of searches performed, or alternative keywords, it will provide a list of terms that include your keyword and you can easily copy a list of terms to your clipboard to paste into a document or webpage.
From there, you can ensure that you place the correct keywords in an article or webpage you are trying to boost in search results. As a general rule of thumb, you want to include the keyword several times in the headers, the body and in image titles without sounding unnatural when reading the finished product.
For the serious optimizer the Google Keyword Planner is still the best solution, but for the quick and dirty SEO strategy, something is better than nothing.
